Trimming the Wick
A wick gradually darkens as carbon builds up. If this affects ignition, use tweezers or needle-nose pliers to grip the wick near its base and gently pull up a clean section. Trim it level with the top of the chimney. Replacement is usually needed after two or three trims, depending on use.
Wick Maintenance
- Remove the insert, then remove the flint spring, felt pad, packing material and old wick. Keep the flint safe.
- Feed the new wick through the chimney’s wick hole and temporarily bend the top to hold it in place.
- Replace the packing in the order it was removed, weaving the wick through it in an S pattern so it makes good contact.
- Replace the felt pad and flint spring, and tighten the screw securely.
- Trim the wick level with the top of the chimney, then return the insert to the case.
The chimney cap on a pipe insert is removable. Follow the instructions for that model.
